Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities inaugurated

The Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022, was inaugurated at Incheon, Republic of Korea, with the mandate of providing technical advice and support for the full and effective implementation of the Decade.

As an ESCAP advisory and governance mechanism for the present Decade, the Working Group membership is characterized by equal representation from governments and civil society organizations. Its 30 members were decided upon by the Commission at its 69th session in May 2013.

The two-day inaugural session (25-26 February 2014) was organized by ESCAP, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Korea and held at the ESCAP Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia. The Working Group adopted its own rules of procedure and a five-year road map (2013-2017) for the implementation of the Incheon Strategy to “Make the Right Real” for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific.

The road map highlights overarching actions that need to be taken at national, subregional and regional levels, to set in motion the timely implementation of the Incheon Strategy. In pursuance of Commission resolution 69/13, the road map as adopted by the Working Group shall be submitted to the Commission at its 70th session, for its consideration and endorsement.

To build on the success of the inaugural session, the Government of India offered to host the second session of the Working Group in February 2015.
