Sixth Session of the Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022

The sixth session of the Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities was held on 24 and 25 September 2020. Due to the COVID-19 situation and ensuing travel restrictions, the meeting was held virtually on the Microsoft Teams platform.

As part of the standing agenda, the recent progress in the implementation of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022, with a focus on discussing Goal 1 (poverty and employment), Goal 6 (gender equality and women’s empowerment) and Goal 7 (disaster risk reduction and management) of the Incheon Strategy.

In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on persons with disabilities, there was a special segment on the topic, including a discussion on present and potential initiatives to protect and empower persons with disabilities in the context of the pandemic.

The session commenced discussion on the preparatory process for the conclusion of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022.

The Working Group was established in 2013 as per its Terms of Reference  endorsed by the Commission. It held its last session  back in 2019.
