Disability needs assessment and capacity development for the Marshall Islands, 15-17 February 2016

ESCAP organized a national consultation on disability statistics for the Government of the Marshall Islands in Majuro from 15 to 17 February 2016. The 3-day consultation aimed at supporting the Government in its efforts to establish by 2017 the evidence base on the implementation of the Incheon Strategy to "Make the Right Real" for Persons with Disabilities and involved many stakeholders including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Economic Policy, Planning and Statistics Office, the Nitijela (Parliament) and disabled people's organizations. Following results were achieved: (i) review of the progress made towards realizing the rights of persons with disabilities; (ii) review of the national statistical system from a disability perspective and assessment of the Government’s capacity to produce reliable disability statistics; and (iii) drafting of the national action plan for operationalizing the Incheon Strategy Indicators.
